Vimeo versus YouTube – Which is Better for Your Business?

Vimeo Versus YouTube

With all the videos showing up on your Facebook and Instagram feeds lately, it should come as no surprise that marketers predict that 80% of all web traffic will come from videos by 2019. If you haven’t given any thought to adding videos to your industrial business marketing strategy, now is the time.

Start creating videos now so you’ll be “on trend” and receiving your piece of the web traffic pie sooner.

Which Video Marketing Tool?

The two most popular video marketing tools are Vimeo and YouTube, but which is better? Here’s a look at some of the factors you’ll want to consider along with which brand is better to help you make a more informed decision.

Search Engine Optimization – YouTube

When it comes to SEO, YouTube is the clear front-runner leaving Vimeo in the dust.

YouTube is currently the second largest search engine, only exceeded by its parent company, Google. If you’re planning your video content like your blog content, with keywords in the title and description, then your video needs to be posted on YouTube for the greatest number of search results.

Number of Users – YouTube

Again, there really isn’t much competition here. YouTube has over one billion (yes, that’s billion, with a B) followers while Vimeo’s following is only about 35 million users and averaging 240 million monthly views. The bottom line . . . your best chance to get seen is on YouTube.

Cost – YouTube

YouTube is free (at least for now) regardless of whether you’re a personal user or a business. YouTube makes most of it’s money with ads. Vimeo offers ad free viewing, but they still have to make money. This means you can expect to pay up to $50 a month for a business plan.

Customer Support – Vimeo

This category is clearly won by Vimeo. With your paid plan comes several levels of tech support which is great if you don’t have a lot of experience and don’t want to take the time to learn how to use YouTube. However, if you’re willing to take the time, YouTube offers several free documents, forums, and (you guessed it) videos on how to use their platform and increase your following.

Storage – YouTube

You’ll find unlimited, free storage on YouTube regardless of what kind of account you have. Vimeo charges for storage depending on how much you need. Their highest level runs $50/month and that’s in addition to your account.

Mobile User-Friendly – YouTube

YouTube’s mobile app handles more than half of their daily traffic. Clearly, viewers like to watch videos on the go. While you can still watch videos on a mobile device with Vimeo, followers are more likely to find your content while exploring on their mobile devices on YouTube.

The Big Winner!

Vimeo versus YouTube?  Clearly, YouTube is the big winner in many of the factors that we’ve compared. That doesn’t mean Vimeo doesn’t have some redeeming qualities though. Vimeo currently doesn’t allow ads so viewers can watch ad-free, they also have better privacy options if you’re a personal user, and you can customize your play options better.

Which Should You Choose?

Vimeo versus YouTube, which one should you choose? It depends on what your marketing goals are. How much time are you willing to spend marketing your video or would you prefer viewers to find your content more organically through searches? Do you want to reach a larger audience or are your videos tailored more to an industrial niche market?  Overall, YouTube is probably your best chance to reach any market without much effort and cost.
