YouTube is notorious for having a less-than-productive commenting community. If you enable commenting, you’ll get quite a few insulting and unintelligent comments generally. Sometimes people start conversations with each other in the comments section that have nothing to do with the video. It is just one of the things that happens on YouTube.
That said, you’ll also occasionally get helpful comments that can help you build your business. Others will also give you positive feedback. You’ll also start to build something of a community online.
Finally, although YouTube doesn’t openly discuss their ranking algorithms, many experts believe that comments are part of YouTube’s ranking formula. After all, if a video is getting a lot of comments, good or bad, that means there’s a lot of activity and that the video is relevant to the topic. Therefore YouTube would rank it higher.
Whether or not you want to enable commenting is a personal choice. For some videos, for example, corporate videos, having hundreds of users posting silliness or slang words may not be great for branding. On the other hand, for a small business getting an active discussion may be very good for business.
Decide what’s best for you and your business. Whether you turn comments off or on is a personal decision and it won’t make or break your business. Do what works for you. The most important thing is that you are consistently posting on YouTube.
