3 Best Title Tag Rules

Title tags are the most important SEO real estate on a page.  Yes, title tags are that important.

Purpose

A title tag is a piece of HTML code that goes in the “head” section of your website. Its purpose is to tell search engines what to display as the clickable link in the search results page. Search engines look at the text and keywords you use in the title tag to determine how to rank your page.

This is not your headline title, but a title tag.  It is only seen on search engine results pages and when you open the page it will appear in your browser tab.

This is how it appears in a search.

Best Practices

Here are the best practices for implementing your title tags:

  • Length 40-60 characters – anything longer will get cut off in the search engine results page.
  • Include the primary keyword for the page at the beginning of the Title Tag.
  • Use a unique title tag for each page – don’t duplicate.

Remember

Title Tags will not appear on the actual page. They will only be seen on a search engine results page and the browser tab at the top of your internet browser.

If you have been following along and taking action on the steps we have provided, your SEO ranking should be improving.  Before you know it you will be on the first page in a Google search.
